John 13:1 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.
13:2 The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus.
13:3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;
'The last supper' just started. This is the last place where they gathered with the Lord at the table listening to His words. "Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father", it means now he is facing the 'death', the death on the cross. Cross is the cruelest among the punishments human has invented.
The night was a dead darkness. "The devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot to betray Jesus." Satan always tries to alienate the disciples from the Lord. The believers should be careful not to be shaken by thought from Satan.
We need to understand the meaning of suffering deeply. That is because the suffering is love. When we know love, we are able to know the eternal life. Just as Exodus 12 describes, Passover is to commemorate the day the Israelite were saved from the death by the blood of little lamb. At this place of the Passover feast, the disciples should have acknowledged the meaning of the death of Jesus who is the little lamb.
It must be a painful night, but the Lord "loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love." Not only the twelve disciples, but also He loved all mankind. He loved us. Even He loved Judas who bore malice to sell out Jesus.
At the moment of miserable death, unspeakable pain, the Lord "showed the full extent of His love". When we are in difficulty, our hearts easily can be hardened. When there is someone who hates us, our hearts can be easily narrow. However, Jesus never stopped His love toward His people until the end taking care of them.
Jesus had the identity that He comes from God and will return to God. This became the light to overcome the dead darkness, the great authority to overcome the power of death. Let us be the true disciples of Jesus, who follows His life through knowing His sacrificial love.
