John 13:34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
13:35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
Now, Jesus is saying His last words facing parting from His people. From here to John 17 is 'Christ's farewell sermon'. This was His last will for us, so we should engrave it on our heart again and again deeply.
The Lord lastly said "love one another". This is "new commandment". There were commandments people received in the past. This is the law of God which is over 600 based on the Ten Commandments. But then, Jesus said in the conversation with the teachers of the law,
Matthew 22:37 Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'
22:38 This is the first and greatest commandment.
22:39 And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'
As recorded in Levites 19, the law already concluded teaching about love. Then, what is the difference between 'new commandment' and 'old commandment'? Jesus said "As I have loved you, so you must love one another." It means to follow His way of love that was revealed by His whole life on this earth. We came to know the way of love we couldn't know before. This love is not merely a concept or letter; it is so clear, vivid love "which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched".
Therefore, 'new commandment' is "the law of the Spirit of life(Romans8:2)". The law of love was engraved on this earth which is greater than the stone by the Lord. This is 'forgiveness', the fundamental law of our life (John8:1-11). Jesus revealed this law not only through His words and lips but also His action and truthfulness. Truly, He was 'agnus dei', "the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world". Redemption, this is the meaning of the Cross.
The true disciple of Jesus Christ is the one who lives following this new commandment. If you are wearing a hijab on the head, then people are able to know you are a Muslim woman. If you are waring turbans, you can be recognized as a Sikhs. Then, what is the sign of Jesus' disciples? If we love one another, as the Lord loves us, everyone will see that we are disciples of the Lord.
The love of Christ was revealed through the Cross. Let us follow His footsteps and fulfill the new commandment of Christ carrying each other's burden.
